Why I Don’t Volunteer

This is an actual event that's happened to me and put me off from doing volunteer work for the rest of my life.

So, here's the story:
When I was a little, about 10 to 12 years old (early middle school, basically), I had to do volunteer work as part of school credits. (It was basically being forced on all the students, we were never given a choice about whether or not we wanted to do it.) I was at an old local church helping pack Thanksgiving baskets to in-need families and my parents had dropped me off with an adult friend who was supposed to watch me, so they weren't actually around.

I had the sudden need to use the restroom, which was a little room in the Church basement. I went in, used it, but when I tried to leave; the door was stuck. I could not get it open, even when I used my full body weight to get it to move. I shouted for help a few times, and no one came to see what was up.

Little kid me started to panic; I was basically trapped in that tiny Church bathroom and there was an entire floor between me and anyone who could help me. I could hear them all above me, but no matter how much I yelled no one seemed to hear or notice. I ended up having a breakdown in there and just sat there and sobbed for help for hours.

Until, by God's grace, I heard my dad calling my name.

I sobbed/screamed "Daddy! Daddy help!" and I could hear him rushing down the stairs to my terrified child self's relief. Then he proceeded to go and get the help I had been calling for hours for.

Turned out the door nob basically broke when I had come in, it had jammed in the doorframe and the only way they could get me out was to SMASH OUT the knob and remove it completely.

What kinda hurt (but also made sense in a way) was that no one had noticed that I was missing until my dad showed up asking where I was. I had told the person who was supposed to be watching me that I was going to the restroom and she had been so focused on her assigned tasks that she hadn't noticed I'd never come back.

I've been reluctant to do volunteer work ever since. I'll donate whenever I can, but not volunteer, thanks.
